an opening in Queens
May 25th, 2008

I was in New York this week and saw Brandon Friend’s MFA thesis show opening at Queens College (image here from the opening). It was a great show. His paintings reminded me of gradually deteriorating billboards or graffiti with their segmented and collaged layers. Though his imagery seemed to be based for a large part in news images, his compositions remained ambiguous enough to keep me wondering exactly what he was trying to say, leaving the work open for many different interpretations.
The studios at the school (at least from what I saw of Brandon’s) are huge and amazing. I wouldn’t mind spending a couple of years working in one of them.
